Markov chain Monte Carlo methods for high dimensional inversion in remote sensing

چکیده
We discuss the inversion of the gas profiles (ozone, NO3, NO2, aerosols and neutral density) in the upper atmosphere from the spectral occultation measurements. The data are produced by the ‘Global ozone monitoring of occultation of stars’ instrument on board the Envisat satellite that was launched in March 2002.The instrument measures the attenuation of light spectra at various horizontal paths from about 100 km down to 10–20 km.The new feature is that these data allow the inversion of the gas concentration height profiles. A short introduction is given to the present operational data management procedure with examples of the first real data inversion. Several solution options for a more comprehensive statistical inversion are presented. A direct inversion leads to a non-linear model with hundreds of parameters to be estimated. The problem is solved with an adaptive single-step Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Another approach is to divide the problem into several non-linear smaller dimensional problems, to run parallel adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo chains for them and to solve the gas profiles in repetitive linear steps. The effect of grid size is discussed, and we present how the prior regularization takes the grid size into account in a way that effectively leads to a grid-independent inversion.

Recovery of Forest Canopy Parameters by Inversion of Multispectral LiDAR Data
We describe the use of Bayesian inference techniques, notably Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and reversible jump MCMC (RJMCMC) methods, to recover forest structural and biochemical parameters from multispectral LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data. We use a variable dimension, multi-layered model to represent a forest canopy or tree, and discuss the recovery of structure and depth profiles...
متن کاملA Stochastic algorithm to solve multiple dimensional Fredholm integral equations of the second kind
In the present work, a new stochastic algorithm is proposed to solve multiple dimensional Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. The solution of the integral equation is described by the Neumann series expansion. Each term of this expansion can be considered as an expectation which is approximated by a continuous Markov chain Monte Carlo method. An algorithm is proposed to sim...
متن کاملMarkov Chain Monte Carlo Particle Algorithms for Discrete-Time Nonlinear Filtering
This work shows how a carefully designed instrumental distribution can improve the performance of a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) particle filter for systems with a high state dimension (up to 100). We devise a special subgradient-based kernel from which candidate moves are drawn. This facilitates the implementation of the filtering algorithm in high dimensional settings using a remarkably sm...
متن کاملSoil Hydraulic Property Estimation Using Remote Sensing: A Review
A review of recent developments related to soil hydraulic property estimation using remote sensing is presented. Several soil hydraulic parameter estimation techniques using proximal-, air-, or satellite-based remotely sensed soil moisture, land surface temperature, and/ or evapotranspiration time series have evolved over the past decades. In particular, microwave remote sensing of near-surface...
متن کاملMass conservative three-dimensional water tracer distribution from Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion of time-lapse ground-penetrating radar data
[1] Time-lapse geophysical measurements are widely used to monitor the movement of water and solutes through the subsurface. Yet commonly used deterministic least squares inversions typically suffer from relatively poor mass recovery, spread overestimation, and limited ability to appropriately estimate nonlinear model uncertainty. We describe herein a novel inversion methodology designed to rec...
